How to effectively clean a bioclimatic pergola ?
Spring is here, and the arrival of beautiful weather comes with its traditional spring cleaning. This thorough cleaning also applies to outdoor installations such as gates, terraces, or pergolas. Let's see here how to clean a bioclimatic pergola to fully enjoy it all summer.
How to clean a bioclimatic pergola : the necessary equipment
To start, you will need the following items :
- A clear water hose or optionally a high-pressure cleaner (HPC).
- A non-abrasive damp sponge or a soft brush.
- A common non-corrosive household cleaning product (soap or dishwashing liquid, for example).
- A clean soft cloth (such as microfiber).
- LThe use of a telescopic pole can also be very useful if your bioclimatic pergola is particularly large.
- A step ladder
How to clean a bioclimatic pergola : the slats
To start the cleaning process, we recommend starting with the roofing part of the pergola: the adjustable slats. It is not necessary to climb above the pergola, as the adjustable function of the slats dispenses you from this task.
If elements such as leaves or twigs are visible in the slats, gutters, or the gutter, remove them by hand before starting to clean.
Next, pivot the slats to access the grooves under the installation and generously rinse with the water hose to remove any deposits and impurities present in the slats. Use the pivot of the slats to access the upper and lower surfaces. Then use the damp soft sponge with soapy water to scrub the slats, paying particular attention to the grooves.
Finish with a rinse using the clear water hose. Note that the water hose can be replaced by a high-pressure cleaner, but you should maintain a distance of about 1 meter from the slats for effective cleaning without risking damage to them.
Cleaning the structure of your bioclimatic pergola
Once the slats are cleaned, you can move on to the rest of your pergola: the poles, beams, and the gutter composing the structure.
To do this, follow these steps: Dampen the structure using the water hose (while rinsing the slats, for example). Gently scrub the different faces of the structure with the sponge soaked in soapy water. This may require the use of a step ladder to easily access the top of the pergola. Rinse thoroughly with water to remove any residue.
As with the slats, a high-pressure cleaner can be used, but make sure to stay at least 1 meter away, especially for the outer parts of the structure, and avoid direct contact with mechanical and electrical components such as motors, winches, and LEDs. Finally, dry the structure and slats with the soft cloth to achieve a flawless result without water marks.

In general, two periods are ideal for cleaning your bioclimatic pergola :
- At the beginning of the warm season to prepare it for summer and remove deposits from winter and spring weather.
- At the end of autumn to remove dead leaves and twigs from the slats, gutters, and gutter.
The frequency of maintenance will depend on the installation location of the pergola and its environment (trees, fields, maritime or urban area). More regular cleaning is recommended in maritime areas. Annual cleaning may suffice if the pergola is generally clean, but double cleaning will make the task easier each time, just like with a car. The essential thing is to carefully monitor your pergola and clean it as needed.
